Acoustics — Determination of sound power radiated into a duct by fans and other air-moving devices — In-duct method |
ISO 5136 specifies a method for testing ducted fans and other air-moving devices to determine the sound power radiated into an anechoically terminated duct on the inlet and/or outlet side of the equipment.
The method is applicable to fans which emit steady, broad-band, narrow-band and discrete-frequency sound and to air temperatures between - 50 °C and + 70 °C. The test duct diameter range is from 0,15 m to 2 m. Test methods for small (d < 0,15 m) and large (d > 2 m) test ducts are described in the informative annexes H and I, respectively.
The maximum mean flow velocity at the microphone head for which the method is suitable, depends on the type of microphone shield used, and is as follows:
foam ball 15 m/s; nose cone 20 m/s; sampling tube 40 m/s.
Above these values the suppression of turbulent pressure fluctuations by the microphone shield may be insufficient.
The method described in ISO 5136 is applicable to a sound source in which a fan is connected to ducts on at least one side. It is also applicable to other fan/attenuator combinations or equipment incorporating fans which can be considered as "black boxes".
Examples of fans and other equipment covered by ISO 5136 are
ducted centrifugal fans, ducted axial flow fans, ducted mixed-flow fans, ducted air-handling units, ducted dust-collection units, ducted air-conditioning units, and ducted furnaces.
ISO 5136 is also applicable to other aerodynamic sources such as boxes, dampers and throttle devices provided that a quiet air flow delivered by an auxiliary fan is available, and the signal-to-noise ratio of sound pressures to turbulent pressure fluctuations in the test duct is at least 6 dB.
It is not applicable to non-ducted fans or equipment.

Acoustics — Measurement of airborne noise emitted and structure-borne vibration induced by small air-moving devices — Part 1: Airborne noise measurement |
ISO 10302-1:2011 specifies methods for measuring the airborne noise emitted by small air-moving devices (AMDs), such as those used for cooling electronic, electrical, and mechanical equipment where the sound power level of the AMD is of interest.
Examples of these AMDs include propeller fans, tube-axial fans, vane-axial fans, centrifugal fans, motorized impellers, and their variations.
ISO 10302-1:2011 describes the test apparatus and methods for determining the airborne noise emitted by small AMDs as a function of the volume flow rate and the fan static pressure developed by the AMD on the test apparatus. It is intended for use by AMD manufacturers, by manufacturers who use AMDs for cooling electronic equipment and similar applications, and by testing laboratories. It provides a method for AMD manufacturers, equipment manufacturers and testing laboratories to obtain comparable results. Results of measurements made in accordance with ISO 10302-1:2011 are expected to be used for engineering information and performance verification, and the methods can be cited in purchase specifications and contracts between buyers and sellers. The ultimate purpose of the measurements is to provide data to assist the designers of electronic, electrical or mechanical equipment which contains one or more AMDs.
Based on experimental data, a method is given for calculating the maximum volume flow rate of the scaled plenum up to which ISO 10302-1:2011 is applicable.

Acoustics — Measurement of airborne noise emitted and structure-borne vibration induced by small air-moving devices — Part 2: Structure-borne vibration measurements |
ISO 10302-2:2011 covers vibration levels from small air moving devices (AMDs) with mounting footprints of less than 0,48 m × 0,90 m for the full-size test plenum defined in ISO 10302‑1 and less than 0,18 m × 0,3 m for the half-size plenum.
It covers all types of AMDs which can be mounted on, and are self-supported at, the discharge or inlet plane of a test plenum box as specified in ISO 10302‑1.
The procedures defined in ISO 10302-2:2011 specify methods for determining the vibration levels that a small AMD would induce in an average structure used in information technology and telecommunications equipment. The methods specified in ISO 10302-2:2011 allow the determination of induced vibration levels for the individual AMD that is tested. These data can be used to determine the statistical values of vibration levels for a production series if levels are measured for several units of that series.

Industrial fans — Determination of fan sound power levels under standardized laboratory conditions — Part 2: Reverberant room method |
ISO 13347-2:2004 gives a detailed description of reverberant room methods for the determination of fan sound power levels. It is for use under standardized laboratory conditions and recognises that tests in situ are subject to increased uncertainty. These test procedures are not necessarily appropriate to site test conditions. Acoustic system effects are presently the subject of considerable research effort.
ISO 5136, which covers the in-duct method, and ISO 10302 for small fans, should be used in conjunction with ISO 13347-2:2004.

Industrial fans — Determination of fan sound power levels under standardized laboratory conditions — Part 3: Enveloping surface methods |
ISO 13347-3:2004 applies to industrial fans as defined in ISO 5801 and ISO 13349. It is limited to the determination of airborne sound emission for the specified set-ups. Vibration is not measured, nor is the sensitivity of airborne sound emission to vibration effects determined.
The sizes of fan which can be tested in accordance with ISO 13347-3:2004 are limited only by the practical aspects of the test set-up. Dimensional limitations, test fan dimensions, and air performance will control the room size, power and mounting requirements for the test fan.
The test arrangements in ISO 13347-3:2004 establish the laboratory conditions necessary for a successful test. Rarely will it be possible to meet these requirements in situ and ISO 13347-3:2004 is not intended for field measurements. Intending users are reminded that, in these situations, there may well be additional acoustic system effects where inlet and outlet conditions at the fan are less than ideal.
The enveloping surface methods may be used for the determination of open inlet and/or open outlet sound power level of fans for standardized installation types.
An estimation (with increased uncertainty) of ducted sound power for fans too small, or otherwise inconvenient, for testing by the in-duct method described in ISO 5136 may also be obtained by the addition of end reflection corrections.

Industrial fans — Determination of fan sound power levels under standardized laboratory conditions — Part 4: Sound intensity method |
ISO 13347-4:2004 applies to industrial fans as defined in ISO 5801 and ISO 13349. It is limited to the determination of airborne sound emission for the specified set-ups. Vibration is not measured, nor is the sensitivity of airborne sound emission to vibration effects determined.
The sizes of the fan, which can be tested in accordance with ISO 13347-4:2004, are limited only by the practical aspects of the test installations.
ISO 13347-4:2004 determines sound power by using sound intensity measurements on a measurement surface which encloses the sound source. It provides guidelines on the acoustical environment, ambient noise, measurement surface, and number of measurements. The test set-ups are generally designed to represent the physical orientation of a fan installed in accordance with ISO 5801 and also used in ISO 13347-2.

ISO 13350:2015 deals with the determination of those technical characteristics needed to describe all aspects of the performance of jet fans as defined in ISO 13349. It does not cover those fans designed for ducted applications, nor those designed solely for air circulation, e.g. ceiling fans and table fans.
The test procedures described in this International Standard relate to laboratory conditions. The measurement of performance under on-site conditions is not included.

Industrial fans — Specifications for balance quality and vibration levels |
ISO 14694:2003 gives specifications for vibration and balance limits of fans for all applications except those designed solely for air circulation, for example, ceiling fans and table fans. However, it is limited to fans of all types installed with a power of less than 300 kW or to commercially available standard electric motor with a maximum power of 355 kW (following an R20 series). For fans of greater power than this, the applicable limits are those given in ISO 10816 - 3. Where the fans in an installation have varying powers both above and below 300 kW, and have been the subject of a single contract, then the manufacturer and purchaser shall agree on the appropriate standard to be used. This should normally be based on the majority of units.
Fan-equipment foundations and installation practices are beyond the scope of ISO 14694:2003. Foundation design and fan installation are not normally the responsibilities of the fan manufacturer. It is fully expected that the foundations upon which the fan is mounted will provide the support and stability necessary to meet the vibration criteria of the fan as it is delivered from the factory.
ISO 14694:2003 is intended to cover only the balance or vibration of the fan and does not take into account the effect of fan vibration on personnel, equipment or processes.

Industrial fans — Method of measurement of fan vibration |
ISO 14695:2003 describes a method of measuring the vibrational characteristics of fans of all types, except those designed solely for air circulation, for example, ceiling fans and table fans. However, it is limited to fans of all types installed with a power of less than 300 kW. For fans of greater power than this, the methods described in ISO 10816-1 and the applicable limits given in ISO 10816-3 may be used. ISO 14695:2003 gives a general method only and does not give criteria for interpretation of data (see ISO 14694).
ISO 14695:2003 specifies the measurement of vibration that may be recorded as overall root-mean- square (r.m.s.) velocity, acceleration or displacement, or in terms of a frequency spectrum, within the appropriate frequency range. Methods of testing when suspended on elastic ropes or when installed on resilient mountings are included.
It is recognized that the oscillatory forces at mounting points can be a useful measurement for analysing the effects on support structures; but such measurements are outside the scope of ISO 14695:2003.

Multiple split-system air-conditioners and air-to-air heat pumps — Testing and rating for performance |
ISO 15042:2011 establishes performance testing and rating criteria for factory-made residential, commercial and industrial, electrically-driven, mechanical-compression, air-cooled air-conditioners and air-to-air heat pumps, described as basic multi-split systems, modular multi-split systems and modular heat recovery multi-split systems. These multi-split systems include air-to-air systems with non-ducted and/or ducted indoor units with integral fans and indoor units supplied without fans.
ISO 15042:2011 is limited to single and multiple circuit split-systems which utilize one or more compressors with no more than two steps of control of the outdoor unit. It is also limited to split-systems with a single refrigeration circuit which utilize one or more variable-speed compressors or alternative compressor combinations for varying the capacity of the system by three or more steps. These split-systems are designed to operate with a combination of one or more outdoor units and two or more indoor units designed for individual operation, and such modular systems that are capable of transferring recovered heat from one or more indoor units to other units in the same system.

Fans — System effects and system effect factors |
This document deals with the likely degradation of air performance of fans tested in standardized airways in accordance with ISO 5801 when compared with the performance of fans tested under actual site conditions. It deals with the performance of a number of generic types of fan and fittings. The results given are intended as guidelines and only provide trends, as the system effect depends on the exact geometry of the fan and disturbing component.
The test data presented in this document are taken from an extensive experimental program conducted 20 years ago by NEL (National Engineering Laboratory, UK), mainly on axial and centrifugal fans. Data are also taken from several research projects financially supported by ASHRAE, some of them being carried out in the AMCA laboratory in Chicago, as well as from results published previously by individual fan manufacturers.
