Solid mineral fuels — Guidance on the sampling of coal seams |
ISO 14180:2017 provides guidance on methods for taking samples from coal seams in the ground, whether from exploration areas or tenements, or from operating underground or open-cut mines. The following methods are described:
a) sampling of small or large diameter holes;
b) drill cuttings sampling;
c) open-cut slot sampling;
d) adit, drift or shaft sampling;
e) pillar sampling;
f) channel sampling;
g) strip sampling.
ISO 14180:2017 does not apply to sampling from moving streams in production or any other source of coal that is not in situ.
Recommendations are made for selection and preparation of the sampling site, and methods are described for taking both small and bulk samples, and for preparing the samples for transport.
NOTE Annex A gives an example of a channel sample record form that can be used to record sampling and other relevant data, and ISO 13909 or ISO 18283 describes how to determine the mass of a representative sample at various nominal top sizes.

Coal flow properties — Part 1: Bin flow |
ISO 15117-1:2003 sets out methods for the measurement of the flow properties of coal, primarily for the design of bins and chutes. It also provides some guidance on the presentation of these data for analysis and design.
ISO 15117-1:2003 consists of a bulk density test and a yield locus test giving information on material flow properties. It also describes a further test, called the wall yield locus, which measures the friction between coal and bin wall material.
Although ISO 15117-1:2003 is nominally for coal, the principles and apparatus may be used for coke and other semi-cohesive particulate materials where a knowledge of flow properties is required.

Hard coal — Sampling of slurries |
ISO 20904:2006 sets out the basic methods for sampling fine coal, coal rejects or tailings of nominal top size < 4 mm that is mixed with water to form a slurry. At very high ratios of fine solids to water when the material assumes a soft plastic form, the mixture is correctly termed a paste. Sampling of pastes is not covered in ISO 20904:2006.
The procedures described in ISO 20904:2006 primarily apply to sampling of coal that is transported in moving streams as a slurry. These streams can fall freely or be confined in pipes, launders, chutes, spirals or similar channels. Sampling of slurries in stationary situations, such as a settled or even a well-stirred slurry in a tank, holding vessel or dam, is not recommended and is not covered in ISO 20904:2006.
ISO 20904:2006 describes procedures that are designed to provide samples representative of the slurry solids and particle size distribution of the slurry under examination. After draining the slurry sample of fluid and measuring the fluid volume, damp samples of the contained solids in the slurry are available for drying (if required) and measurement of one or more characteristics in an unbiased manner and with a known degree of precision. The characteristics are measured by chemical analysis or physical testing or both.
The sampling methods described are applicable to slurries that require inspection to verify compliance with product specifications, determination of the value of a characteristic as a basis for settlement between trading partners or estimation of a set of average characteristics and variances that describes a system or procedure.

Provided flow rates are not too high, the reference method against which other sampling procedures are compared is one where the entire stream is diverted into a vessel for a specified time or volume interval. This method corresponds to the stopped-belt method described in ISO 13909-2.

Coke (greater than 20 mm in size) — Determination of mechanical strength |
A sample of coke greater than 20 mm in size and of known size distribution is subjected to mechanical stresses ina rotating drum. The degree of breakdown of the coke is evaluated by a process of sieving and size analysis after 100 drum revolutions (Micum test) and, if desired, after 500 drum revolutions (Irsid test).

The sample is oxidized by nitric and sulphuric acids or by the use of Eschka mixture. Then, using the method specified in ISO 2590, the arsenic is reduced by zinc in sulphuric acid or hydrochloric acid medium. The arsine formed is absorbed in a solution of silver diethyldithiocarbamate in pyridine. The purplish-red colour produced by the colloidally dispersed silver is measured photometrically at the maximum of the adsorption curve (wavelength approximately 540 nm). Solid mineral fuels — Determination of phorphorus content — Reduced molybdophosphate photometric method |
For taking the phosphorus into solution the following two methods are specified: The carbonaceous material is removed by ashing in amuffle furnace under specified conditions and the phosphorus is extracted by treatment with hydrofluoric and sulphuric acids. The carbonaceous material is removed by repeated oxidation with nitric acid in the presence of sulphuric acid. The determination is carried out by adding ammonium molybdate and ascorbic acid solution and measuring the absorbance of the resulting blue solution by a siutable optical instrument.

Coke — Determination of true relative density, apparent relative density and porosity |
For calculating the true relative density the mass of water displaced by a known masss of dry coke, ground to pass a sieve of nominal size of openings 212 um, is determined using a pyknometer. - The volume of a large amount of coke is determined by displacement in water; dividing the mass of the dried coke by the mass of an equal volume of water gives the apparent relative density. - The porosity is calculated from the true relative density and the apparent relative density of the coke.

a) determining the true relative density of coke, crushed to <212 µm, in relation to water;
NOTE “True relative density” varies according to the displacement liquid used.
b) determining the apparent relative density of coke, i.e. the ratio of the mass of a volume of dry coke to the mass of an equal volume of water;
c) calculating the porosity of the coke.
