Where necessary, individual requirements are given for particular engine applications. ISO 3046-4:2009 applies to RIC engines for land, rail-traction and marine use, excluding engines used to propel road-construction and earth-moving machines, agricultural and industrial types of tractors, road vehicles and aircraft. Also excluded are self-governing engines and those engines requiring only maximum speed or maximum fuel delivery limitation. ISO 3046-4:2009 defines requirements for compression–ignition oil engines (diesel engines). The scope of this document is limited to steady state conditions and does not address fluctuations in the flow rate. The test procedure determines the contaminant capacity of a filter, its particulate removal characteristics and differential pressure. This test is intended for application to filter elements with an efficiency of less than 99 % at particle size greater than 10 μm. Upon agreement between manufacturer and purchaser, this test method can be applied to filters with higher flow rates. This test method is intended for test parts made from composite materials that experience mechanical property changes within the temperature range experienced in service.
