ISO 18871:2015 Method of determining coalbed methane content ISO 18871:2015 provides methodology for measuring coalbed methane content of coal core samples obtained by coring or sidewall coring during well drilling. It shall be also applied to drill cuttings samples, if the equipment for the determination of the coalbed methane content according to a respective national standard is not available. The selection of the most appropriate method shall consider the purpose of the test and the possibilities of sampling. ISO 18871:2015 is applicable for the direct method of measuring coalbed methane content. It includes sample preparation, experimental procedures and calculation methods. Indirect methods of measuring gas content of coal (not included in this standard) are generally based on either the gas sorption characteristics of coal under defined/specified pressure and temperature conditions. ISO 18871:2015 includes three types of direct measuring methods: conventional desorption (slow desorption) of core samples, fast desorption of core samples, fast desorption of cuttings or lump samples. The difference among them lies in the time allowed for gas to desorb before final crushing and in sample size and shape. ISO 18871:2015 is applicable for the determination of the methane content of coal during coal and coalbed methane exploration for the determination of free gas content of low rank coals is included.  Published 2015-09 Edition : 1 Number of pages : 29 Technical Committee 73.020 Mining and quarrying

ISO 19434:2017 Mining — Classification of mine accidents ISO 19434:2017 establishes a classification of mine accidents by their origin or causes, by the type of accident, and by their results or consequences. The latter includes only the accidents resulting into consequences on people, not equipment or machinery. Different categories of causes, types and consequences of mine accidents are briefly defined, and a 3-digit code is assigned to each category. These can be combined to ultimately allocate a unique 15-digit code to each type of mine accident. This code can then be used in statistical analysis. Similarly, an allocated code clearly shows to which categories of causes, type of accident and resulting consequences the mine accident belongs to. ISO 19434:2017 is applicable to all surface and underground mines. NOTE: Accidents can be classified in terms of other items than those given in ISO 19434:2017, especially in researches and in other classification schemes. These can be, e.g. classifications based on the level of financial damages; gender, age, professional skills, terms of service and academic degree of the personnel; days of week, month, year, hour of accident; area of site, etc. While these classifications can be useful to enable certain decisions to be taken by the health and safety executives, they are not considered in ISO 19434:2017.  Published 2017-10 Edition : 1 Number of pages : 25 Technical Committee 73.020 Mining and quarrying

ISO 349:1975 Hard coal — Audibert-Arnu dilatometer test Specifies a method for determining the swelling properties of hard coal when heated under standard conditions in a dilatometer. In performing the method a pencil made of powdered coal formed under pressure is inserted into a precisely calibrated narrow tube and topped by a calibrated steel rod which slides in the bore of the tube. The whole is heated at a constant and definite rate. By making regular readings of the displacement of the rod as a function of the temperature and expressing the displacements observed as percentages of the original length of the penicl a curve is plotted.  Withdrawn 1975-01 Edition : 1 Number of pages : 11 Technical Committee 73.040 Coals

ISO 501:1981 Coal — Determination of the crucible swelling number The sample is heated in a covered crucible under standard conditions to a final temperature of 820 +- 5 °C. The coke button obtained is classified by comparison with the outlines of a set of standard profiles. ISO 589:1981 Hard coal — Determination of total moisture For all hard coals two methods are specified: A) The sample is heated in a flask under reflux conditions with boiling toluene. The moisture from the coal is entrained by the toluene vapour and carried to a condenser fitted with a graduated receiver. The water then separates in the receiver, to from the lower layer, whilst the excess toluene is returned to the destillation flask by means of an overflow. The moisture in the coal is calculated from the volume of water collected. B) The sample is dried in an oven at a temperature of 105 to 110 °C in a current of nitrogen and the moisture calculated from the loss in mass.  Withdrawn 1981-10 Edition : 2 Number of pages : 6 Technical Committee 73.040 Coals
ISO 589:2003 Hard coal — Determination of total moisture ISO 589:2003 describes two methods for the determination of the total moisture content of hard coals. Depending on the coal rank, there may be systematic differences between the results obtained by applying different methods on subsamples of the same sample. Methods using a nitrogen atmosphere are suitable for all hard coals; methods with drying in air are only suitable for hard coals not susceptible to oxidation.  Withdrawn 2003-11 Edition : 3 Number of pages : 7 Technical Committee 73.040 Coals
ISO 589:2008 Hard coal — Determination of total moisture ISO 589:2008 describes two methods for determination of the total moisture content of hard coals, a two-stage method and a single-stage method. For either method there is a choice between drying in air and drying in a nitrogen atmosphere. Depending on the coal rank, there may be systematic differences between the results obtained by drying in the different atmospheres on subsamples of a sample. Drying in a nitrogen atmosphere is suitable for all hard coals, while drying in air is only suitable for hard coals not susceptible to oxidation.  Published 2008-11 Edition : 4 Number of pages : 9 Technical Committee 73.040 Coals
ISO 602:1983 Coal — Determination of mineral matter A sample of the coal is partially demineralized by treatment with hydrochloric and hydrofluoric acids under such conditions that coal substance remains unaffected. The loss in mass of the coal due the acid treatment is recorded and the undissolved part of the mineral matter is determined by ashing the partiallay demineralized coal. The iron copntent of the ash is determined so that the pyrites present in the extracted coal can be calculated. In addition the amount of hydrochloric acid absorbed by the coal substance is determined.  Withdrawn 1983-02 Edition : 2 Number of pages : 4 Technical Committee 73.040 Coals

ISO 647:1974 Brown coals and lignites — Determination of the yields of tar, water, gas and coke residue by low temperature distillation The sample is heated in an aluminium retort to a temperatur of 520 °C. The products of decomposition pass into a water-cooled receiver; the tar and water are condensed while gaseous products pass to atmosphere. The coke residue and the receiver and its contents are weighed. The mass of tar is obtained by difference to the mass of water determined by entrainment with toluene or xylene. A separate determination of moisture in the coal, also by entrainment with tulene or xylen, is amde so that the decomposition water can be calculated. The peecentage of gas is obtained by subtracting from 100 the sum of the percentages of coke residue, of tar and decomposition water.  Withdrawn 1974-11 Edition : 1 Number of pages : 6 Technical Committee 73.040 Coals
