Paper and board — Determination of roughness/smoothness (air leak methods) — Part 2: Bendtsen method |
ISO 8791-2:2013 specifies a method for the determination of the roughness of paper and board using the Bendtsen apparatus.
ISO 8791-2:2013 is applicable to paper and board which have Bendtsen roughness values between about 5 ml/min and 3 000 ml/min when measured with variable-area type testers and between about 50 ml/min and 5 000 ml/min when measured with electronic type testers. It is not suitable for soft papers which allow the land to make a significant impression on the surface or for high-air-permeance papers which allow a significant flow of air to pass through the sheet, or for papers which will not lie flat under the measuring head.

Paper, board and pulps — Fibre furnish analysis — Part 7: Determination of weight factor |
Specifies two methods for determining the weight factor of fibres used in the fibre furnish analysis of paper, board and pulp: by comparison with a reference pulp (any pulp that contains only one type of well-defined fibre - mechanical pulps and beaten pulps are unsuitable, and whose weight factor is known) or by calculating from the fibre coarseness. The methods are applicable to all kinds of fibres of pulp from unmixed wood species which do not contain more than 5% of other fibres with an essentially different weight factor.

ISO 9416:2009 specifies a method for the calculation of light-scattering and light-absorption coefficients based upon diffuse reflectance measurements made under the conditions specified in ISO 2469 using the colour matching function and CIE illuminant C.
It is emphasized that the strict evaluation of the light-scattering and light-absorption coefficients requires conditions which cannot be achieved with the instrumentation specified here. The values obtained by application of ISO 9416:2009 are dependent on the application of the Kubelka-Munk equations, not to full reflectance data but to reflectance factor data obtained using the specified d/0° geometry and a gloss trap.
The use of the method is restricted to white and near-white uncoated papers with an opacity less than about 95 %. Paper that has been treated with a fluorescent dyestuff or that exhibits significant fluorescence can only be dealt with if a filter with a cut-off wavelength of 420 nm is used to eliminate all the fluorescence effect in the UVex(420) mode.

Paper and board — Determination of CIE whiteness, D65/10 degrees (outdoor daylight) |
ISO 11475:2004 specifies the procedure to be used for determining the whiteness of papers and boards. The values obtained correspond to the visual appearance of white papers and boards with or without fluorescent whitening agents when they are viewed under the CIE D65 daylight illuminant. It is based on reflectance data obtained over the full visible spectral range (VIS) in contrast to the measurement of ISO brightness which is limited to the blue region of VIS.
In addition, it specifies a method for adjustment of the UV-content to correspond to the D65 daylight illuminant , insofar as results obtained when fluorescent whitening agents are present are dependent upon the UV-content of the radiation falling upon the sample. It is specific for the measurement of fluorescence in the blue region of the spectrum.
This method is not applicable to coloured papers containing fluorescent dyes.
It should be read in conjunction with ISO 2469.

Paper and board — Determination of CIE whiteness, D65/10 degrees (outdoor daylight) |
ISO 11475:2017 specifies the procedure to be used for determining the whiteness of papers and boards. The values obtained correspond to the visual appearance of white papers and boards with or without fluorescent whitening agents when they are viewed under the CIE D65 daylight standard illuminant. It is based on reflectance data obtained over the full visible spectral range (VIS) in contrast to the measurement of ISO brightness which is limited to the blue region of VIS.
In addition, it specifies a method for adjustment of the UV content to correspond to the CIE D65 daylight illuminant[10][11], insofar as results obtained when fluorescent whitening agents are present are dependent upon the UV content of the radiation falling upon the sample. It is specific for white fluorescent paper samples where the emission due to the fluorescent whitening agent (FWA) occurs in the blue region of the visible spectrum.
This method is not applicable to coloured papers containing fluorescent dyes.
ISO 11475:2017 should be read in conjunction with ISO 2469.
NOTE 1 This document is based on the CIE whiteness formula, published in CIE 15.3-2004[9].
NOTE 2 A related International Standard, ISO 11476, specifying the procedure for obtaining values corresponding to the appearance of these products under indoor illumination, has also been published.

Paper and board — Determination of CIE whiteness, C/2 degrees (indoor illumination conditions) |
ISO 11476:2010 specifies the procedure to be used for determining the CIE whiteness of papers and boards, in order to obtain values which correspond to the visual appearance of white papers and boards, with or without fluorescent whitening agents, when they are viewed indoors. It is based on radiance factor data obtained over the full visible spectral range (VIS) in contrast to the measurement of ISO brightness, which is limited to the blue region of VIS. ISO 11476:2010 also specifies the procedures for the determination of CIE tint values and the fluorescent component of CIE whiteness.
In addition, it specifies a method for adjustment of the UV content to correspond to that of CIE illuminant C, since the results obtained when fluorescent whitening agents are present are dependent upon the UV content of the radiation falling upon the sample. The CIE illuminant C is taken to be representative of indoor illumination conditions because it contains a suitable proportion of UV radiation. This method is not applicable to coloured papers containing fluorescent dyes. It is specific to the situation where the fluorescence occurs in the blue region of the visible spectral range.
ISO 11476:2010 is read in conjunction with ISO 2469.

ISO 12192:2002 specifies a method for the determination of the edgewise compressive strength (ring crush resistance) of paper and paperboard, especially board used in the manufacture of cartons and packing cases.
ISO 12192:2002 applies to all paper and paperboard with a thickness in the range of 280 micrometres to 580 micrometres. It may also be used for paper and board having a thickness less than 280 micrometres but those results are more a reflection of the paper's stiffness than its compressive strength. For paper and board having a thickness exceeding 580 micrometres, it may be impossible to bend them to the circumference without disturbing the structure.

ISO 16260:2016 describes a method to measure the energy required to rapidly delaminate a test piece of paper or board. Rupture of the test piece in the "Z" or thickness direction is initiated by a pendulum having a defined mass, moving at a defined velocity.
The procedure is suitable for both single- and multi-ply papers and boards, including coated sheets and those that are laminated with synthetic polymer films. It is particularly suitable for papers and boards that may be subjected to Z-direction[2],[5] rapid impacts, impulses, or shock loads during printing or conversion.
The test procedure entails the adherence of double-sided adhesive tape to both sides of the test piece under pressure. For this reason, the method may be unsuitable for materials that might be structurally damaged by compression or are porous enough to permit migration of the tape adhesive into or through the test piece.

Paper and board — Determination of grease resistance — Part 1: Permeability test |
ISO 16532-1:2008 specifies a method for the determination of the grease resistance of paper and board. The paper or board can be tested creased or uncreased. The test is primarily intended to establish a level of grease resistance by determining the time taken for a simulated “fat material” (palm kernel oil) to penetrate (break-through) the sheet for papers such as food board, and greaseproof and vegetable parchment. It is also applicable to paper and board which have been internally or surface sized with organophobic materials, or made grease resistant by a plastic extrusion coating.

Paper and board — Determination of grease resistance — Part 2: Surface repellency test |
ISO16532-2:2007 specifies a method for the determination of grease resistance of paper and board. Primarily, it is intended to establish an approximate level of grease resistance, by testing the degree of surface repellency and/or antiwicking characteristics of paper and board, internally or surface sized with organophobic materials such as fluorocarbons. Some packaging paper and board products, designed for containing pet foods, food for human consumption and other materials, are produced in this way, and any surface stains, due to grease wetting or penetrating the paper or board surface, are aesthetically unacceptable.
This test is not intended to determine the permeability of grease through the paper or board, for which ISO 16532-1 applies.

Paper and board — Determination of grease resistance — Part 3: Turpentine test for voids in glassine and greaseproof papers |
ISO 16532-3:2010 specifies a method for the determination of the grease resistance of paper and board. It provides an accelerated comparison of the relative rates at which oils or greases, such as those commonly found in foodstuffs, can be expected to penetrate voids in papers such as greaseproof or glassine, where the grease or oil resistance is provided by mechanical means only. It is not applicable to grades of paper or board that are given grease or oil resistance by means of a coating or internal treatment for which ISO 16532-1 or ISO 16532-2 apply.
